Dealing with a Groundhog

A groundhog, also known as a woodchuck, remains a somewhat curious animal. They don't chuck wood, and they certainly aren't hogs. A groundhog is actually a type of squirrel, one that lives underground. Generally, they are harmless creatures, although they could carry rabies.

The main problem with groundhogs is they burrow into the ground leaving holes in people's yards. The holes present more than a visual nuisance. People could hurt themselves tripping after stepping in one. So, trapping groundhogs and relocating them may prove beneficial. Getting them into a trap requires using bait.

Bait for Groundhogs

Like so many other animals, groundhogs aren't likely to turn down a free meal. Putting "anything" inside a trap might not work, though. Some foods serve as better baits than others. Groundhogs love sweet fruit, so a cantaloupe could be an excellent bait choice. Cantaloupe juice dripping into the trap might be tough for the creature to ignore.

Various other baits gain a recommendation, including several popular garden vegetables. Strawberries, sweet corn, peaches, apples, and lettuce may work. Surprisingly, peanut butter may do the job, even though it is a store-bought and sometimes processed food choice.

Employing the Necessary Care

Choosing the right bait might not be enough. Selecting an appropriate trap helps, too. Correctly placing the bait inside the trap could increase the chances of success. Maybe such a job is best left to those with experience.
