Termite Treatment and Barriers on the Gold Coast

Getting rid of termites

Termites are destructive creatures that, unlike other insects, are more interested in the wood that your home is built from than the food scraps in your kitchen!

Termites bore holes through wood and will feed on anything that has wood, whether it’s your favorite lounge chair, bed frame, window frame, door, table, cupboard, or the trees and bushes outside in your yard. While feeding, they leave tell-tale piles of wood dust – which in addition to being a key way to identify termite activity, is also unfortunately not healthy for people who are allergic to dust and asthmatic patients.

Although termites love wood, they don’t turn away from other varieties of feed stock – anything with cellulose is fair game for them. Cellulose is a substance that is found in trees, so its no surprise that they’ll attack your home on all fronts. Termites have also been known to feed on some plastics, and even dry wall.

Why termites love your homes and offices

  • Wood: This is the major attractant of termites. But termites do not attack just any wood; they typically target timber that has not been coated with a termite deterrent chemical. Additionally, they’ll find untreated wood in the form of trees outside your home, and your furniture.
  • Cellulose: Contrary to some beliefs, termites aren’t *just* about your wood. They typically love chewing on anything that contains cellulose. Cellulose can be found in some clothes, luggage, and even paper – given that most paper is just wood pulp from trees. Also, some textiles and luggage have parts that are made from wood derivatives and other plants that contain cellulose, like cotton.
  • Warmth: These wood-boring insects are mostly found in warm places around your homes. Their favourite spots can include the wooden wardrobe where your clothes are, or wooden shelves where your favorite collections of books or important documents are.
  • Our termite treatment methodology

Termite treatment is best achieved by prevention – however, that’s not always possible. Sometimes a customer will call us and ask us to inspect their home for termites. After inspecting your house and confirming the presence of termites, we’ll employ the use of one or more of the following methods of treatment and barrier to ensure their extermination:

  • Fumigation with chemicals: We treat every part of the structure that contains wood – whether the wood is exposed or not. For customers sensitive to chemicals, there are increasingly eco-friendly options available, but we advise you to keep away from applicated areas for some time as a safety measure.
  • Use of barriers: There are both chemical and physical barriers. While the chemical barriers apply chemicals meant to kill termites around the perimeter of your house by attracting them to the poison sites, the physical barrier acts to prevent them from entering by using a physical shield.

  • Depending on the signs of activity at your house, we will advise on the best treatment plan going forward, and methods to deter further activity.

    Tips to prevent further infestation

  • Get your wood treated with paint, lacquer, or any other hardening wood finishes. Termites don’t typically enjoy eating through paint or hard coatings.
  • Aerate your home regularly: Since termites love warm and humid places, airing your home will discourage termite infestation.

  • We save you from having to spend money on repairing damages caused by termites by ensuring they don’t even get near your homes and offices. Do not hesitate to call us to give you access to the best termite treatment and barriers suitable for the climate and environment on the Gold Coast.
